Hockey Day Korea 2017!

Posted on 13/10/17

Everyone,

In case you don't receive league emails, this is the blast just sent out on HDK tomorrow:

This Saturday, October 14th, CBHK will be hosting the 2nd annual ‘Hockey Day Korea’ event at our home rink from 12-4pm. The inaugural Hockey Day Korea ran last November with success and has growth since that time to include at this year’s event:

Jim Paek – Korea National Ice Hockey Team Coach

Mr. Eric Walsh – Canadian Ambassador to Korea

Grace Choi – Director: Make-A-Wish Korea

Cha Seok Bae – Gyunggi-do Ice Hockey Federation President

Daniel Kim – CCM Korea

The essence of Hockey Day Korea is actually many things:

- to celebrate and promote hockey and especially ball hockey in Korea

- to teach ball hockey skills to Korean youth attending the event

- most importantly: to raise money for Make-A-Wish Korea.

A Go-Fund-Me campaign has been started and the link is right here: https://www.gofundme.com/make-a-wish-korea. It’s also being shared on Facebook.

Please help support this campaign as the Director of Make-A-Wish Korea, Grace Choi, has mentioned that the cost of granting one wish to an ill ‘wish-child’ can be prohibitively expensive and the organization struggles to raise sufficient funds on a regular basis.

Looking at it in this way, if we all donated just $20, that would amount of over $2500!

Let’s show Make-A-Wish what we can do collectively as a league.

The event itself will feature an opening and closing ceremony, as well as kids ball hockey camps in which some of our league volunteers will be teaching ball hockey skills to the youth on hand. And from 3-4pm, Team Korea ball hockey will take on the Sangmu (Army) Ice Hockey team in an exhibition game for all kids and parents to enjoy. Some members of the Korea National Ice Hockey team will be playing for Sangmu.

Hockey Day Korea this year is also special in the sense that it is set to launch the Korea Ball Hockey Association. The mandate of KBHA will be to serve as an organization for ball hockey in Korea and as a legal entity with the Ministry of Sport & Tourism. A Board of Directors will be established and Jim Paek has already agreed to serve as honorary chairman of the KBHA.

In terms of teaching ball hockey to kids at Hockey Day Korea, we plan to continue this effort and form a weekly ball hockey youth club in which kids can register and continue learning ball hockey every week at our rink. This is all tied to the mission of KBHA; of promoting ball hockey in Korea and giving back to the community.

Most importantly, we have just gotten confirmation that we’ll receive national tv coverage through Arirang tv; they’ll have a reporter at the event tomorrow. There is a lot to be excited about for the future of ball hockey in Korea and as you can well imagine, it’s a fair amount behind the scenes to host an event like this, and if you’d like to get involved in any way, please step up and show your support!

Thank you to all of our volunteers who have helped plan Hockey Day Korea so far, and of course everyone feel free to attend on Saturday if you can!

Best,

Colin G.
